Hello all! Finally I have finished this piece… I’m sorry for not being so active here, I’ve been a bit busy and back and forth with this as well, so haven’t been able to be present so much.
Slick as a Magpie. Mixed media on paper.
As for this itself, this has been a bit of a chore and a bother to complete. I just couldn’t finish the oil slick effect to my liking, I tried all sorts of different media to emulate the effect… Coloured pencil and ink to name a couple, but it’s far harder than I thought initially… The only way I could possibly create that effect is to spend absolutely ages on this project copying every detail, and that’s just not practical.
In the end, I used acrylic inks, paint pens, and pouring medium to create the oil slick ink blot. I tried to swirl the colours around using the pouring medium and colours to create abstract shimmery effects, but that didn’t work… In the end, I tried to draw swirling patterns with paint pens. Unfortunately, that makes the end result look too opaque.
In my opinion, it looks more like a paint splat than an oily sheen, but I’ve had to stop here otherwise I’d spend forever doing this. I’m glad it’s finally done, but disappointed with the outcome. Either way, I hope you all enjoy. Oh, and sorry for the rubbish photo.
Cheers for now. Have a great week ahead!
I’ve been back and forth a few times…This project has been harder to work on than first thought. I actually had to retrace my design over and over again, due to wanting to add certain things to it, and also retracing it wrong each time, it’s been a bit grueling and frustrating…. And this is not finished just yet, but I’m getting there.
I’m still not satisfied with the sheen of the wings… I’m wanting to re-work certain areas over, and I’m really scared to complete the blot as I want it to be just right… Everything can still go terribly wrong at this stage, I’m plucking up courage bit by bit. Here’s hoping I will have completed this soon… I’m really dying to finish this drawing.
A special thanks to those who have followed me, both through this project, and in general. I really appreciate you all. Thanks ever so much.
🌷I also give my deepest sympathy for the recent terror attacks that happened in Russia and Sweden. My thoughts go to those affected. 🌷
That’s all for now, hope you enjoy! Have a great week ahead.
Hello everyone! After much scribbling, I’ve planned out the final position of the magpie using inspiration I gathered from last week. Shamefully though, I got so engrossed in magpie planning that I didn’t plan how the blot would look (oops). It’s probably going to be the hardest part too, as I plan for it to have a shining oil slick like sheen.
This was penciled in before I went in with a fine liner. You may be able to tell what I’ve done in pencil because of the marks on the page which I couldn’t erase… There are also a few other unintentional mistakes I made but I’m hoping that colouring will cover them up… Otherwise I’ll have to resort to using my light box to retrace it all…
The magpie itself will be coloured in with coloured pencil. I’m not sure about how the blot will be coloured though… I may or may not use the same medium, but feel free to make any suggestions!
That’s all for now, stay tuned for more next time!
