Day 31: Ripe For The Pecking

My interpretation for the 31st and final word of Inktober 2019, ‘Ripe’. Some crows perched on a couple of ripe pumpkins.

Day 31 Ripe Ripe For The Pecking

Ripe For The Pecking: It’s a shame it isn’t anymore… happy late Halloween!

For this final entry, I wanted to incorporate another Halloween element as this day corresponds to the day of Halloween. I found out that Pumpkins can be ripe, and as I am contemplating whether or not to release another Birdmas challenge into the fold, I drew some crows to accompany them.

I took my time doing this but didn’t apply any pressure… heck, I failed Inktober anyway, so why the hell not? I practiced some colouring in and tried my best to get into it as I was applying a wash layer by layer. Hopefully it’s effective enough.

…So will Birdmas exist this year? I’m not sure, but one thing is for sure – I want it to.

This entry was drawn using a black fineliner and Inktense on A5 paper.

That’s it! Finally this hell is over! I never thought I’d ever say this about Inktober, but this year’s Inktober has been more of a chore than a pleasure. My decreased motivation, mixed with the horror of the prompt words made this a nightmare! I got a few good things out of it, but not much more than that. Add that to the fact that I failed this year to keep to constraints, and that’s even more frustration. In any case… thanks so much to those that followed this. Here’s hoping my next project isn’t so uncomfortable. Cheers all!

Day 30: Double Caught

My interpretation for the 30th word of Inktober 2019, ‘Catch’. A cartoon creature catching two balls.

Day 30 Catch Double Caught

Double Caught: In the line of fire.

Not much to say about this one other than I wanted to have something catch 2 of an item for extra drama. This was the result.

I liked the idea of a restricted palette, and I sketched the balls in a shade of yellowish-green, so, with that, I decided to go for consistency and draw the main character in similar hues.

The next entry will be the final one! (Thank goodness…)

Day 29: Wounded Soldier

My interpretation for the 29th word of Inktober 2019, ‘Injured’. An injured warior clutching his side in agony.

Sorry if this is too graphic, but given the subject word, there isn’t much I can do to make it not look like this.

Day 29 Injured Wounded Soldier

Wounded Soldier: I can relate a lot to how this person feels…

I just wanted to do a line drawing. It’s another landscape, and the concept is a soldier who’s been injured by arrows in combat. There are other dead soldiers too, just to decrease the emptiness of the piece.

The red blood is the only colour contrast here, and that’s deliberate to highlight the concept and prompt word the best.

This entry was also completed using a black fineliner and a red Faber Castell PITT pen on A5 paper. I hope you enjoy as always.

Day 28: Puffin Day!

My interpretation for the 28th word of Inktober 2019, ‘Ride’. A puffin riding a bicycle.

Firstly, I dedicate this to an artist friend of mine who I’ve nicknamed “Criminal Knight”. I want to thank her because she’s been a lovely support to me during rough times… so, Crim, if you’re reading this, thank you!

Day 28 Ride Puffin Day!

28th October is now my Puffin Day!

She and I had a deal that we’d pick a day each on Inktober, and that day would be the day we would draw a puffin. I picked a day randomly, and it was Day 28 – hence the name of this piece, and the subject!

The puffin thing was originally a joke about the Icelandic cuisine where they roast puffins (and even cook them in cookie dough!) Now, it’s become something of a personal icon to me, and I hold it in my gosh awful black heart. 😊

This was fun to draw, and was also done before entry 26. A bittersweet combo of full on frustration and happiness.

This entry was also completed using black ink and Faber Castell PITT pens on A5 paper. Cheers for stopping by! I’m so very happy if people bother to look and read!

Day 27: Coat of Arms Pencil Before Brush

My interpretation for the 27th word of Inktober 2019, ‘Coat’. A custom design coat of arms.

Well, again… Inktober is over, but here is the “Coat” entry. All I’ll say is that I twisted the prompt word up and designed my very own coat of arms.

I’m proud that I’m from England in that these sorts of designs hail from our history and the history of Europe mostly. I think they were first created way back in the 1300’s and used as proud symbols by individual families – mostly by royals or the aristocracy, but on the odd occasion, also by the poor too. They’re kind of like our version of the totem pole in a weird sort of way, haha.

Day 27 Coat Coat Of Arms Pencil Before Brush

Coat Of Arms Pencil Before Brush: My own custom design.

Loosely describing it, these designs would comprise of elements that make up the coat of arms. A shield was often used in the centre alongside two “supporters” that hold up the shield (the supporters were animals most of the time). In the centre of the shield, there would be a design with symbols that had meaning, and there would be a crest on top, usually a crown or knights helmet. The format of a coat of arms differed somewhat between countries – the format I describe was commonly used in Britain.

I struggled with the floral parts of the crest quite a bit, but overall, this was moderately easy and fun to do.

Day 26: Dark And Handsome

My interpretation for the 26th word of Inktober 2019, ‘Dark’. A dark but classy man sitting at a desk with his cocktail drink.

THIS ENTRY IS THE ONE REASON WHY I’M SO LATE!! ARGH!! INKTOBER ENDED 3 DAYS AGO!! 😡

I did every other entry after this before I completed this, but I couldn’t upload them out of order!! I’m disappointed in myself big time. Yes, I’ve failed, but anyway… 😟

Day 26 Dark Dark And Handsome

Dark And Handsome: But neither shaken nor stirred!

This entry litterally took days because of how unhappy I was with it each time. I had such strong hopes for this idea to display the word “Dark” with some serious class. Since I was listening to a lot of jazz this Inktober season, I fell for an idea to have a man sitting at a bar in an atmosphere that was nice and dark.

If this had gone right the first time, I would have been more proud of it, but even after so many corrections, I’m still mildly infuriated with it. Conclusion – this wasn’t worth doing. But I’m hoping the fact that I’ve tried… just to put this up even after Inktober is done says something, if anything at all.

Be prepared to see the other entries in quick succession.

Ugh, sorry for the rant, this entry was drawn using black ink on A5 paper. Hope you still enjoy even though it’s horribly late. Cheers so much!

Day 25: All You Can Nosh

My interpretation for the 25th word of Inktober 2019, ‘Tasty’. Some “taste buds” eating a feast of delicious food.

I did this for a bit of fun this entry because this word was also slightly ridiculous… but hey! At least I did it ON TIME this time! 😄

Day 25 Tasty All You Can Nosh

All You Can Nosh: Mmmm! Tasty!

I was inspired by lots of images of comfort and fast food… the sort of food that is generally unhealthy for you, but just tastes absolutely delicious… And I tried to come up with what would eat it to complete the concept of the prompt.

…So I did something kind of sad and invented these little pink/purple “taste buds” to chomp at the food. After all… it’s ONLY our taste buds that literally make anything “Tasty”… so why not?

To read some people’s minds – the word “Nosh” in the context of this entry’s name means to eat or feast on. It’s British slang.

Additionally, Just to let people know, I’m sorry if I’ve missed or not replied your gorgeous and kind comments on my work… Thank you so much for them! It’s not that I ignore you, please don’t think that… it’s just that I’ve not got much time. I’ll get to comments in the end, so please bear with me until then.

Day 24: Topsy Horror

My interpretation for the 24th word of Inktober 2019, ‘Dizzy’. A scary looking clown doing an awkward balancing act.

I want to talk about this piece, but I’m tired as raw heck and running out of energy now. Please bear with me, if there are any mistakes.

I saw the word “Dizzy” and immediately thought of someone balancing on top of loads of different things, and how that feeling of motion could be tied to being dizzy… I don’t know, does that make sense? I hope it does…

Day 24 Dizzy Topsy Horror

Topsy Horror: Definitely not clowning around…

So, I took that a step further and drew a clown as the subject character. Not only are balancing acts common in the circus, but clowns can also double up as Halloween gimmicks too… hence why I thought this most appropriate.

…This prompt word wasn’t bad, but wasn’t at all good either.

This entry was drawn using a black fine liner and Faber Castell PITT pens on A5 paper. Once again, thanks so much for stopping by, everyone… you don’t know how much it means to me. If you read the way through, you especially deserve thanks and respect… so Cheers!

Day 23: Hunting Slab

My interpretation for the 23rd word of Inktober 2019, ‘Ancient’. A simulated ancient cave painting of some hunting plans.

And after all of my failings and suffering… I’m now FINALLY almost on track! Hooray! 😄

Day 23 Ancient Hunting Slab

Hunting Slab: Moooooo!!!

I was scared of taking a risk with this entry, because it was another loose and experimental one… but I did it for the good of my nearly non existent sanity. I knew that, for me, the word “Ancient” would require A choice between two ideas. Either:

A: A breathtakingly detailed piece that takes an overkill amount of time and effort than is allowed or…

B: A very simple “back to basics” doodle which wouldn’t look good, but would sacrifice less time (and less of my patience too).

There is no in-between, my word is bond. It’s either Parthenon greatness or pathetic cave painting. I chose option B.

I gained inspiration from a bit of cave painting history, and a tiny bit from the primitive style artist: Jean Michel Basquiat. The subject itself is about a plan to hunt some food. (Obviously it’s unreadable, but I just wanted the basic aesthetic of that). Is it something I’d hang on the wall before my head? Certainly not… but it’s something. Nothing more.

This was completed using many different inks on A5 paper. Thanks ever so much… and goodnight for now, everyone. I hope to come up with something better for the next prompt!

Day 22: Haunted Shelf

My interpretation for the 22nd word of Inktober 2019, ‘Ghost’. A ghost floating in front of an old bookshelf.

Hmm… I think I was expecting more of this, but then again, I’m not disappointed with this entry either – it’s pretty alright again. My aim was to use Inktense as a strong saturated base, for which to use diluted white ink on top to create the illusion of a ghost that you can see through.

Day 22 Ghost Haunted Shelf

Haunted Shelf: On second thought, perhaps I’ll watch Tv…

That’s where the bookshelf comes in, since there are many irregularly sized shapes and colours, the see-through “ghosting” effect would be more successful, coupled with the fact that things like libraries and posh haunted houses, both of which contain bookshelves, can be the perfect setting for a ghostly atmosphere.

I’d say where I went slightly wrong is with the overall opacity of the white ink. I just wish it was slightly more weaker than it is to get that convincing illusion.

I’ll add a side note, that I’m very thankful for at least having a DECENT AND RELEVANT prompt word!! Thank you!!!

This was completed using many different inks on A5 paper. Expecting more wacky unprofessionalism? You were…? Great! The tooth fairy doesn’t exist, you fools! There you go! 😂😜🤟
